Science

Grade 8 Science

In grade 8 Science we have been doing chemistry and looking specifically at the particle theory. In one of our recent lessons we discussed non-Newtonian fluids. One of these fluids is oobleck! Which is not only fun to make and play with, but is a very interesting representation of how some substances don’t fit perfectly into the states of matter.

A non-Newtonian fluid does not have a constant viscosity. Oobleck is an example of a non-Newtonian fluid. So the, viscosity increases when you apply pressure. Therefore, when oobleck is at rest, the water droplets surround the starch granules, allowing the grains to flow freely. However, if a sudden force is applied it pushes the water out and jams the starch grains against each other, making it a solid! So cool!
