Dear Burnie High School Community,
As a school we are midway through Term 3 where students are working hard on the feedback that they received at the mid-year reporting period with the educational programs that staff are delivering.
Staffing News
Ms Durkin has decided to officially retire from the Department for Education, Children and Young People. Her last official day is September 3 (remembering that Ms Durkin is currently on long service). On behalf of the school, I would like to formally thank Ms Durkin for not only her contribution to Burnie High School, but the number of roles that she has taken on throughout her career. She has always been an advocate for public education and is one of the hardest working teachers that I know. We wish her all the best in her retirement.
I’ll continue in the Acting Principal role until the end of 2024. There is currently an external process being carried out to determine who the substantive principal will be from the start of 2025 onwards.
Kinmen Students
We were delighted with how BHS staff and students welcomed a group of 20 students from Kinmen during the first two weeks of Term 3. It was fantastic for BHS students to be exposed to students from a different culture and the opportunities to learn from each other in a classroom context. Thanks to staff and families who assisted with excursions, English lessons and hosting students. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the following students, through a selection process, were chosen to partake in the outbound trip to Kinmen with Mr Douglas later in the year.
- Shukuya Broomhall
- CJ Cole
- Anina Eastwood
- Ava Ferguson
- Connor Stirling
Parent Teacher
It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers be part of the parent teacher interviews earlier on in Term 3. When schools and parents are on the same page with information they are giving young people we find it to be much more successful in terms of student progress. If you didn’t get a chance to attend the parent teacher interviews or would like to touch base with one of your child’s teachers, please don’t hesitate to get into contact with them via the school office, email or Seesaw.
I hope that the second half of the year is as good as the first.

The musical will be performed in the Burnie High School Centre for Performing Arts on Tuesday September 17, Wednesday September 18, Tuesday September 24 and Wednesday September 25 at 7pm. The show will run for approximately 90 minutes and promises to be excellent entertainment for people of all ages.

Interact have recently named our community pantry – Burnie High School Sharing Shelves. This name came from Year 7 student Bradley, who received a prize for his winning idea.
The concept of the pantry is to provide a regular supply of non-perishable foods to the school community. These items will be available on the shelves, kept in the main school office, free of charge.
Interact are asking for donations towards the Sharing Shelves in the form of items such as: long life milk, cereals, pastas, canned foods, biscuits and rice. We are hoping that in time, we may attract sponsorship to keep the shelves active and running but will gratefully add any donations to the shelves at any stage.
Recently, the Interact Club received a $100 donation from the Somerset Rotary Club to get the Sharing Shelves up and running.
If any family wishes to donate to the Sharing Shelves, please send your donations to school with students, or drop into the main school office.
Any enquiries can be made to Mrs Cohen at emma.cohen@decyp.tas.gov.au
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 7 -10.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 7-10 at Burnie High School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are:
When: Monday 9 September – Friday 20 September 2024.
Who: Years 7 - 10
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 7-10 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Burnie High School on 6431 2744.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
