Parent Teacher Interviews
During the second week of Term 2, parent teacher interviews were held in various locations of the school. It was fantastic to see so many parents (and students) be part of conversations with their teachers about their progress, learning and assessment feedback. I also would like to acknowledge the efforts of Burnie High School staff for the preparation prior to these interviews occurring. I’d encourage any parents/carers wishing to make contact with their child’s teacher to do so via phone, Seesaw or email.
International Students
Burnie High School were fortunate to accept an offer from GETI to accommodate a small group of Japanese students for a two week period. The students from Japan are part of a tour group who learn from our students about schooling and culture. It was fantastic to see how accepted the Japanese students were to the Burnie High School community along with how they integrated into Burnie High School classes. I’d like to personally thank the Burnie High School ‘buddies’ for assisting these students with their day to day routines, the families that have welcomed these students into their homes and Mr Kamil Douglas for coordinating this visit.
Congratulations
We have recently received news that four Burnie High School students have secured full time employment in 2024 based on their work experience or school based apprenticeship. Zeke Pennington has secured an apprenticeship with Fairbrother, Jackson Groenewege and Cameron Wolfe will be undertaking apprentice positions at Coastal Engineering and Belting and Jack Barton will be taking up full time employment at Mad Hakers. I’d like to personally congratulate these students and hope that I am able to formally congratulate some further Grade 10 students in the coming months.
Staffing Update Term 3
Ms Trudy Durkin is currently enjoying the warm sunshine of Townsville along with her role as grandmother. Ms Durkin will return to Burnie High School on August 24th. During this time I’ll continue in the role as Acting Principal, Mr Joshua Salter will continue to be a Grade 8 student support leader but also be Acting Assistant Principal and Mr Timothy Fisher will be an Acting Advanced Skills Teacher, along with his role as Grade 7 student support leader.
Mrs Melanie Murphy is on leave for the duration of Term 3 and returning to us in Term 4. Ms Grace Lozoraitis-Jones has settled in extremely well in taking on Mrs Murphy's responsibilities and duties.
Mrs Maree Glover has recently taken some extended Long Service Leave to travel overseas and will return towards the later stages of Term 4. Mr Brett Riley (a previous staff member of Burnie High School) brings a wealth of experience from his curriculum lead role in Mathematics to cover Mrs Glover's classes.

Are you making every school day count?
It’s Term 3 already – welcome back for another term!
As we move through the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging.
It’s important your child keeps up good attendance habits though.
Going to school every day means your child has every chance to learn, and be around their friends and teachers. Every day adds up, to benefit your child now and in the future.
If you’re having trouble getting your child to school, please talk to us. We’ll listen to your situation, and help in any way we can.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
On Wednesday the 9th of August, our visiting Study Abroad Tour students from Japan, along with the Grade 9 BHS students with whom they were paired with for their time with us, went on an excursion to see some of what the North-West Coast of Tasmania has to offer. The excursion included a tour of the Gunns Plains Caves (where the incredible formations and glow worms were highlights) and a visit to Wings Wildlife Park (where feeding the Kangaroos proved an interesting new experience for our guests). It was an excellent day and a great way to get to know our Japanese friends.
On Thursday the 17th of August, we had another excursion with the Study Abroad students. On the excursion we had the chance to explore Reliquaire, buy chocolate at Anvers, learn about the solar system at the Planetarium, and have epic battles at laser tag. It was fun way to end our two weeks together. It was a fantastic few weeks where we’ve made some great memories in and out of class, and we wish the Study Abroad students safe travels on their return to Japan!
Ciao! Term 3 sees a change in Grade 7 with an extra class joining us. This makes for two Grade 7 classes, a Gade 8 and a Senior class. We welcome all new Italian learning students and returning students. This term students will be engaged in learning all about school life in Italy, take an Italian look at the world and study houses.
In Week 2, Burnie High Italian students took part in the Education Perfect Regional Championship, going up against 21 other Tasmanian schools to earn the most points during the week. Burnie High ended the week with a whopping 3,832 points answering a total of 6,881 questions. This placed BHS 5th overall in Tasmania and 3rd for our student number category. Special mentions go to Alex Norton (Gr9) for placing 10th overall and earning a Bronze award, Baily Norton (Gr7) for placing 26th overall and earning a credit, and Ted Mason (Gr8) for placing 66th overall. These were our top performing students from BHS.
Coming up shortly, students will take part in another cooking lesson where they will learn how to make traditional Italian hot chocolates (cioccolata calda).
Arrivederci!
