Iris Breuer Award
Congratulations to Paige Hook who entered a creative writing piece titled ‘The End Before the Beginning’ into the 2022 Insight Creative Writing Competition and won the prestigious Iris Breuer Award. This is a national competition, open to all Australian students, from Year 7 to Year 12. Paige won the award which was based on her demonstrating, in both her story and her accompanying statement, her engagement and passion for writing and literature. The judge particularly commended Paige on the vividness of her language and descriptions. They commented that Paige’s story used language in a way that was fresh and innovative. ”It took us on a journey that was both evocative and satisfying.” I am thrilled that Paige had allowed us to publish her story in this newsletter.

Can I get help with school levies?
There are a range of options available to support families with the costs of schooling.
You are eligible for the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) if you hold a Health Care Card, Low Income Health Care Card, or Pensioner Concession Card. Once you have applied for STAS, you will not need to pay any levies. You may apply online (https://www.education.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/parent-fact-sheets/fees-levies/), or collect a paper application form from the school office.
If you are experiencing financial difficulty or financial hardship, and none of the support options above will work for your family, you can contact staff at Burnie High School on 6431 2744 or the Department of Education’s Financial Services Unit at Fin.Serv@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 827 055.
Where can I access the Levies and Charges Policy for our school?
The Levies and Charges Policy for our school can be accessed by https://burniehs.schoolzineplus.com/
What will happen if I forget to pay?
Students will not be prevented from participating in any learning activities that are part of the curriculum if their levies have not been paid.
If your family has not paid their levies by the due date, and has not organised to pay in instalments, the school will be in contact to remind you that payment is due and will check to see if your family requires support. If your levies remain unpaid after the school has sent two follow-up letters, the matter will be forwarded to Finance and Budget Services within the Department of Education to be followed up.
Under no circumstances will the status of payment of levies or charges be discussed directly with students.
Who can I talk to about levies?
You are a valued member of our school community and we welcome your feedback on levies and charges at our school.
You can contact Lois Cameron the School Business Manager if you have any questions or would like to talk about levies at our school. Personal information relating to levies will always be treated with total confidentiality.
The levies and charges we receive from families supports our school to deliver learning opportunities for all students. Thank you for your contribution.
Students will be sitting NAPLAN between 15 and 27 March 2023.
The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance; however, students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
This is the first year NAPLAN will be held in March, having previously taken place in May. This change was made so school systems would have access to results earlier in the school year, so they can be used to inform teaching and learning plans for the remainder of the year.
Why NAPLAN is conducted online
NAPLAN online provides a better assessment and more precise results.
One of the main benefits of NAPLAN online is that it uses tailored (or adaptive) testing. This means that students receive questions better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.
Online testing also allows us to provide a wide range of accessibility options to support students with disability to access NAPLAN.
Feedback from students is that they find the online test more engaging.
Please note that students in Year 3 complete the Writing Test on paper.

The BHS Farm Activities – final wrap
What a great year we have had in the Agriculture and Animal Studies classes, we have also had some extra students come on board to utilise our great facilities. These students include the Hands On Learning (H.o.L) groups (grade 8, 9 and 10) as well as the Learning Hub students each Thursday morning.
The Agriculture Study classes have undertaken a world of work with planting, growing, feeding, weeding and harvesting, we have senior students gain work placements and school based apprenticeships and traineeships. Well done to Derek Chatwin (Dairy) and Jack Griffin (Horticulture). Both these students have been enrolled in BHS Agriculture Studies since Grade 8 – well done boys and good luck with your future pathway.
We look forward to another great year with students engaging in outdoor education of a different sort.
If you ate food today, live in a housing structure and are clothed – Thank a farmer! If you love science – farming is for you!
The H.o.L students have complemented the activities at the farm and returned to our community in many ways – assisting the Agriculture Studies classes by transplanting seedlings, building tree guards and making/donating food to the Somerset Vinnies Soup Kitchen. Not to mention their major projects of three new chicken houses, new fences, gates and a Pizza oven! The H.o.L Boys group had a well earned rest at South Burnie Beach recently – not for long though – see the pictures of Jye and Kale constructing a wooden teepee shelter.
The Learning Hub group have also contributed to the school farm and gardens and entered the Food Ladder Recipe Challenge (checkout Instagram), the students grew, basil, Bok Choy, lemons, collected eggs and more, in order to create a yummy two course meal of Fermented Black Bean and Bok Choy with beef/pork (we have pigs and calves at BHS) + noodles with a dessert of Lemon and Basil Gelati (all ingredients from the farm but the sugar and cream).
Have a Merry Christmas – when students return we will be harvesting lots of fruit and veggies, as well as eggs and meat.
BHS grows food to educate our students, not for profit. A by-product of this is the availability of fresh produce – students are the first priority, if you or your family require fresh seasonal produce please let the office know. Any excess is then given to the Home Economics Department and donated to charity.
