On Saturday 5 November, on behalf of Burnie High School and the Burnie Counts Cluster, Mr Joshua Salter and I had the pleasure of attending an awards event at Old Parliament House in Canberra. The Susan Ryan Family Engagement Awards recognise Outstanding Family Engagement Practice. The awards are presented by the Australian Council of State School Organisations, and we were very proud to be as one of four national finalists.
Outstanding results for Taya Munday
Congratulation Taya on winning two silver medals at the recent 2022 Tasmanian All Schools Athletic Championships. Taya threw a personal best of 32.05m in the discus, and a solid 11.36m in the shotput. We look forward to seeing Taya’s upcoming performances at the BHS Athletics Carnival on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 November, and at the Inter High Carnival on 7 December.
I strongly encourage all students to attend the Athletics Carnival. As well as the traditional ‘races’, there will be activities that are lots of fun for everyone, and the very popular ice-cream van will be back!
There will be plenty of sunscreen available at these events, and while teachers do their best to constantly remind students of the importance of regularly applying sunscreen, we also greatly appreciate family support. Have a chat with your child about what sun safety measures they can take……slip, slop, slap.

A reminder to families that end of year reports will be distributed on December 9.
The report will show your child’s learning achievement on a 9-point visual scale which replaces A-E ratings for students in Prep to Year 10.
The 9-point scale shows more specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments on the report.

Survey for Families: Out-of-Area Enrolments – The Department for Education, Children and Young People is reviewing the procedure for out-of-area enrolments at Tasmanian Government schools. We are interested to learn more about your perspectives on the benefits of attending your local government school, and the reasons families seek enrolment at a school outside their local intake area. You are invited to have your say using an online survey at https://forms.office.com/r/CX6hgsUvcX.

Welcome back to the last term of the school year!
This final stretch can sometimes be challenging to get your kids to school. But being at school is the best place for our kids, and it’s important we make every school day count.
Here are some tips to help:
▪️ Create a routine.
▪️ Give yourself enough time in the morning.
▪️ Be on time, every day. Monday to Friday.
▪️ Schedule appointments and trips outside of school hours.
▪️ Get a good night’s sleep.
▪️ Set some technology boundaries.
Please talk to us about your situation if you’re having trouble getting your child to school every day.
Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize
Congratulations to our very own Mrs Emma Cohen who was a recipient of the Frank MacDonald Memorial Prize. A comment from Emma as follows:
In 2023, I will be travelling with a group of six young Tasmanians to sites of historical significance in honour of Frank MacDonald MM. Over the next few months, I will attend monthly meetings around Tasmania and in February we will be traveling to Canberra to the Australian War Memorial. In April, we will travel a little further away, to a destination yet to be determined. While away, I hope to reconnect with my own family history in addition to learning about the Australian contributions to WWI. This experience will deepen my understanding of WWI, and bring this knowledge back to Burnie High School, where I will be able to share my learnings with students and colleagues alike.
It is a privilege to be chosen for this trip, and I hope sharing the stories of our past will help students to connect with the significance of WWI into the future.
Thanks,
Emma
BreastScreen Tasmania has been providing free screening mammograms (breast X–rays) in Tasmania for over 29 years. Screening mammograms are the best way for women aged 40-74 to detect breast cancer early, providing the most successful outcomes.
The Screening Recruitment and Cancer Prevention team wanted to reach out to schools personally to offer free information sessions for staff regarding BreastScreen Tasmania for the month of October, however, we understand that with only 8 weeks of the school year left to go, times are busy!
Instead, we would like to offer our time early next year to provide such a service. As well as promoting BreastScreen Tasmania, we also promote the National Cervical Screening Program (for people with a cervix aged 25-74) and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (for anyone aged 50-74). Sessions can be tailored to suit your needs and can be delivered face-to-face or online.
In addition to information sessions for your staff, we also provide exhibitor tables for school-based events for the friends and families of students. Here we can provide information about all three national cancer screening programs to the wider community.
We can assist your staff, your students’ families, and their friends to make informed lifestyle choices that can support the prevention and early detection of cancer. If you would like to find out more and book a session, contact us today!
