What I love about the last weyear is the delightful opportunity that I have to celebrate the amazing achievements that have been made across the year. On Friday 10 December we live streamed a special assembly dedicated to honouring and farewelling our amazing 2021 Grade 10 graduates. There was much joy, and perhaps some tears shed, as we looked back across the four years since this group started at Burnie High School. The grade 10’s entertained us with their musical items and gave us a good laugh with their rendition of YMCA.
At the Farewell Dinner on Friday night Grade 10 students presented themselves outstandingly to the staff and the wider Burnie community as the young adults that they have now grown into. They celebrated the friendships that they have made and the milestone that they have achieved in reaching the 10th year of their formal education. The weather was perfect, the gowns exquisite and the venue stunning. Special thanks to Eloise Crocker for the venue set up, the 2022 SRC for food service and clean up, Bevan Eastley and Leon Richardson for traffic control and security, Mark Saint-John for red carpet arrivals and lastly Giovanna Simpson and Kamil Douglas for red carpet introductions.
On the evening of Monday 13 December staff, students, parents, and invited guests attended our official Presentation Evening to celebrate the outstanding success of students in the domains of the arts, sports, and academics. I strongly encourage all students to set their goals high for 2022.
On Tuesday 14 December our Grade 10’s were treated to a breakfast barbeque, an early viewing of the yet to be released movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and a visit to Burnie park for a barbeque lunch and ice-cream. We thank the Grade Coordinator Georgina Smith for organising this special day.
On Wednesday 15 December all students were able to participate in a range of sporting and recreational activities organised by Kade Munday and the HPE team.
Finally, on Thursday 16 December the whole school enjoyed a relaxing day at Boat Harbour on the School Picnic.
As Principal at Burnie High School I look back on 2021 as a year of many achievements. We continued to navigate the complexities brought on by Covid-19 while maintaining our relentless pursuit of school improvement.
I am very proud of the staff at Burnie High School who are dedicated, hardworking and totally committed to doing the very best that they can for your children, so I look forward to 2022 with high aspiration for the achievements that we will be able to make.
Finally I wish students, staff and families a joyful and safe Christmas season.
This week, to wrap up science in grade 9, students did a kidney dissection. In this lesson, students were required to use a scalpel to cut open the kidney in half lengthways. Students started carving from the concave side of the kidney and cut to one side of the centre line. They needed to leave the tubes intact on one side of the dissection and then observe the internal appearance and structure of the kidney. In doing so, students gained knowledge regarding the function of the kidney and how it relates to homeostasis in different body systems.

Congratulations to our Spring Roster netball teams on their outstanding results. Many BHS teams made it to their grandfinals. Well done to the BHS Bandits who took out the B1 premiership with Lottee Rolls named best in finals. The Twilight Tournament on Saturday saw the Bandits back up to take out that grand final too. Congratulations to Zeke Pennington for being awarded best on court in the final. On Sunday, at the Alan Hudson Best of Schools Carnival, the Grade 7/8 and 9/10 BHS teams both won their way through to their respective grand finals and won both! The teams looked very snazzy in the new BHS netball dresses that all teams can look forward to wearing in 2022. A marvellous way to finish another successful year on the netball courts. Well done to all players and thank you to our wonderful coaches, umpires and parents for your continued support and help.
