Successful Grant Application – Fair Education $250,000
I am thrilled to announce that we have been successful in winning a $250,000 grant through the newly established Burnie High Numeracy Improvement Collective. This collective is made up of Burnie High School, Cooee Primary School, Somerset Primary School and Burnie Primary school. This grant will help us to work together over three years to improve student outcomes in Mathematics. We will develop shared and consistent content and teaching practices across the collective, we will engage with families to support Mathematics learning at home, we will provide professional learning to ensure all teachers are highly skilled to teach Mathematics, and we will reduce the impact that transitioning from Grade 6 to Grade 7 can have on learning. There is much work to be done but all four schools are fully committed to this exciting project.
HeadStart into Physical Sciences
On Monday 22 November and Tuesday 23 November over fifty of our Grade 10 students will make their way to Hellyer College for the 2021 HeadStart into Physical Sciences program. This program will provide students with a sneak peek at what to expect from the Mathematics and Science courses that they have enrolled in for 2022. Students will make their own way to the college where they will assemble in the Café for a 9:30am start. Morning tea and lunch will be provided, with each of the days finishing at 2:30pm. At the end of the day students are responsible for making their own way home. We know that the Burnie High School students who have been invited to participate HeadStart into Physical Sciences will make the most of this opportunity.
2021 Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Athletics carnival on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 November. The behaviour, engagement and sportsmanship displayed over the course of the two days was outstanding. Many visitors to the school commented to me about the manner in which students conducted themselves, and how smoothly the carnival ran. On behalf of students and staff I congratulate the HPE staff lead by Mr Kade Munday, and special thanks to Mr Joshua Salter who commentated like a professional for the duration of the two days. Congratulations to the winning house Blythe, the record breakers and the 2021 Track and Field Champions who were recognised in our whole school assembly this week. We wish our athletics team the very best of luck on when they represent us on Wednesday 1 December.

Miss Sherry Chen has had to leave us early for personal family reasons. Miss Chen’s classes will be covered until the end of the year by the very experienced Ms Rebecca MacLachlan and Mrs Josie Post.
